Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

15 September, Celebrated as ENGINEER's Day in India, Srilanka & Tanzania on the birth memory of Dr. Moshagundam Visvesvaraya, mostly known as Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
He is known for his works in the field of civil engineering. He was a great civil engineer and statesman. He also served as 19th Diwan of the Mysore (Currently- Mysuru), Karnataka, India.

Birth:
 15, Sep, 1860.

Death:
   14, April, 1962. 
    Bangalore India

Education:
Born to an orthodox Telugu Brahmin family. At the age of 12 he lost his father. He completed his scholar education from his birthplace Chikkaballapura. After this he moved to Bengaluru for higher education, he pursued degree of B.A. there. After completion of graduation in 1881, he joined Pune college of Engineering for further education. For post graduation he joined University of Bombay.

Career:                                                                 
• At the early stage of his career he joined PWD Bombay as Assistant Engineer in 1885 at an age of 25.
• At the age of 34, In 1894 he designed and carried out water works for the municipality of Sukkur, Sindh.
• At age 36 he served as Executive Engineer in Surat, in 1896.
• From 1897 – 1899, He served as Assistant Superintendent Engineer in Pune.
• At age 39 he srved as Executive Engineer for Irrigation, Pune, 1899
• In 1901 he served as Sanitary Engineer and Member of Sanitary Board, Bombay Indian Irrigation Commission
• In 1993, he Designed and constructed automatic gates Lake Fife Storage Reservoir & Introduced new system of irrigation known as “Block System”. Which he later patented on his name.
• Represented the Bombay Government at Simla Irrigation Commission, 1904.
• In 1907 he served as Superintending Engineer
• At the age of 48, In 1908 He took a voluntary Retirement from British Service.
• In 1909 he served as consulting Engineer in Nizam of Hyderabad, Supervised and carried out engineering works on Musi river.
• 1912 he works for Public Works Department and as Railway Consultant.
• After that he served as Chief Engineer and Secretary to Government of Mysore.
• At the age of 67 he joined Board of Directors of Tata Steel, 1927–1955.

Honours by Order of Indian Empire:
• In 1911, Sir Visvesvaraya was appointed as the Companion of the order of the indian empire (CIE).
• In 1915, When he was serving as the Diwan of the Mysore he was appointed as the Knight commander of the order of the indian empire (KCIE).

Awards:
• In 1912 He was appointed as Diwan of Mysore
• In 1923 he was elected as the president of the Indian science congress.
• After India got independence, Sir Visvesvaraya was awarded with the India's highest honour Bharat Ratna for his great contribution to the civil engineering field.
• In 1955, he was awarded with so many honours e.g.
An honourary membership from London Institution of Civil Engineering, Fellowship from Indian Institute of Science, and many degrees including D.Sc, D.Litt, LL.D from 8 different universities.

Popular Projects:
• Sir Visvesvaraya designed and supervise the constuction of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam , Asia's longest dam.
• Worked as chief Engineer in construction of flood protection system for the city of Hydrabad.
• Proposed a plan for Hirakud Dam
• Bhadrawati Iron and Steel works.
• Mysore sandal oil and soap factory.
• Queen College.
• Bank of Mysore.

Works as Diwan of Mysore:
• In 1912, when he was appointed as Diwan of mysore he focused too much of education sector, During his work session number of schools increased from 4500 to 10500.
• Hindustal Aeronautics Limited, Bengaluru (HAL).
• Premier Automibile Factory, Mumbai.

Memorial:
Visvesvaraya National Memorial, is not only a place it was constructed adjacent to the house of sir Visvesvaraya which is used by the locals as the temple. This memorial is used to kept all the awards and the honours received by Sir M. Visvesvaraya along with his personal belongings Cups, Spectacles, Books, His visiting cards etc. A model of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam which Visvesvaraya designs and supervise the constuction of. Viswesvarayya National Memorial Trust manages the memorial for Visvesvaraya at his birthplace of Muddenahalli.
